Starting therapy is a big step. It takes courage to reach out for professional care. It's important that you feel informed about the care you will be receiving. That's why at TherapyKC each new client receives a free consultation before we begin working together. The consultation isn't just a formality. It's an important part of making sure the therapy at this practice is the right fit for you.
Here's what the consultation is all about:
- The Right Fit for You - Not every therapist is the best match for every person. The consultation gives us a chance to meet each other, discuss what's bringing you to therapy and set goals. I'll take the time to understand you. Once you tell me that I'm getting it, I'll share the ways that I'm seeing the issues you're describing. Adding what types of treatment would be beneficial. This will give you a chance to know my approach as well as get a feel for what our sessions will be like. It will also help us avoid any assumptions that might later become obstacles.
- Knowing Where We're Headed -First and foremost, the goals have to be yours. They also have to be clear and something that therapy can realistically help you achieve. To do this we'll discuss what you're hoping will be different if therapy is successful. As you share that I'll ask any clarifying questions and offer some thoughts for reflection. In this back and forth discussion we'll make sure that we have a shared understanding about your goals. This will become something of a compass of our work together.
- Getting to Know Your Therapist - Therapy is a deeply personal process. Trust is essential. The consultation gives you space to not only get to know my style but also ask any questions that you might have. These questions often include: my style of therapy, my theoretical orientation, my education, whether or not your needs fall into my specialty, etc.
If you're curious about therapy or wondering if this could be the right step for you, scheduling a consultation is a simple, no pressure way to find out.
